Trading N95 Masks for Halloween Masks: Kids 5-11 Can Get the Pfizer Vaccine By End of October

Trick-or-treating is back on track for 2021.

In news that’s sure to thrill kids, parents, and dentists nationwide, Pfizer and BioNTech said on Monday children aged five to 11 are on track to receive the two companies’ Covid-19 vaccination by Halloween.

Pfizer and BioNtech’s trial included 2,268 participants, the companies said. Two shots of a 10-microgram dose, which is one-third the dose of an adult shot, produced antibody levels comparable with those in 16-to-25 year-olds who received the adult dose. The child dosage also proved safe, with similar or fewer temporary side effects — such as sore arms, fever, or achiness — that teens experience.

I think when the vaccine is approved for kids 5-11 there’s going to be a huge outpouring of relief on Twitter and then something like 70% of parents won’t get their kids vaccinated.

Since July, pediatric cases of Covid-19 have risen by about 240% in the US – underscoring the public health need for vaccination For the week ending September 9th, kids represented more than one in four new cases (28.9%) of Covid-19 in the US, the American Academy of Pediatrics says. A spread of the Delta variant and its substantial threat to children led to half a million children being positive for the disease in just two weeks.

Pfizer and BioNTech also said data for “the other two age cohorts from the trial – children two to five years of age and children six months to two years of age – are expected as soon as the fourth quarter of this year”. If the U.S. regulatory process proceeds in the same way it did for older age groups authorization for use would be possible by the end October just in time to allow kids to safely roam their neighborhood to get the treats.

While kids are at lower risk of severe illness or death than older people, more than 5 million children in the U.S. have tested positive for COVID-19 since the pandemic began and at least 460 have died, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics.
