Gerald Dean Valentine – Duluth News Tribune

Gerald Dean Valentine, 93 years old, died at his Lakeside home on August 2, 2022. He was the son Roy Valentine and Ruth Hoffman’s March 17, 1929, in Montevideo, Minnesota.

Gerry attended local schools through 8th grade. He then quit formal education to work on the family farm near Kerkoven in Minnesota. At the age of 20, he was a ship captain on the Great Lakes oreboats. He then worked with Kettle Brothers, doing sheet metal construction.

Jeanette Burton of Duluth was his wife. They had three children together. Between 1951 and 1952, he joined the Air Force and was stationed with the 73rd Airbase Squadron in Duluth.

Jeanette, his children Beverly Giles (Ken), Geri Valentine and Valerie Valentine are his survivors. Margo Erjavac is his step-daughter. Marcus is also a brother to Roger Valentine (Bev).

His long-time partner Marge Erjavac, his parents Roy and Ruth Valentine and his brothers Gene, Larry, Gordon, Ronald, Gene, Lillian and Lillian predeceased him.

In 1960, he was hired as a Fuller Brush Man. This position he held for over 50 years. Even into his 90’s he got phone calls from customers looking for a product.

He loved the Northland lakes and woods. His fondest memories are of his time at the deer stand or fishing for crappies along with his brother Gordon. For many years Gerry enjoyed his friends at the Friday morning coffee crowd at Johnson’s Bakery in Lakeside.

Lakeland Shores’ neighbors and friends supported him daily and provided transportation and food. His family is eternally grateful to him for all of this kindness.

Later, a family gathering will be held at the deer shack to scatter his ashes.
